My Friend Diego
Rob Brouwer / Pablo Eppelin
Festival year: 2012
Luis Alberto Alarcón was once a member of the security forces under former Chilean president Allende. 34 years after the military coup in Chile, he leaves the Netherlands to return to his homeland and confront the man who once tortured him.
Seven days before the hearings begin, Alarcón flies out of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol for his long journey to the town of Temuco in southern Chile. After nearly three decades, he will finally stand face to face with the man who once tortured him for weeks. Before that encounter, Alarcón stands before the camera and painstakingly reconstructs in detail how he was captured after the coup of 11 September 1973 and subjected to systematic abuse. While Alarcón dredges up painful memories from the past, he prepares himself for one of the most important moments in his life: the confrontation with his torturer, Brigadier-General Manuel Vásquez Chahuán.
