Festival year: 2012

British national Fergus makes a living as a security officer in post-war Iraq. When his friend Frankie is killed under suspicious circumstances, he decides to personally investigate the matter, leaving no stone unturned.

‘Route Irish’ is the name of the dangerous and notorious road that connects the airport of Baghdad to the secure ‘Green Zone’ in central Baghdad. This is where Frankie is killed in 2007, six years after Fergus had persuaded him to join his team in Iraq. Riven by sorrow, guilt and disbelief, Fergus starts his own investigation to find out what caused the death of his friend, allowing nothing and no one to get in his way. Exciting political thriller about the aftermath of the war in Iraq and those who cash in on it.

Director Ken Loach renewed his collaboration with screenwriter Paul Laverty for the making of this film (they previously worked together on The Wind that Shakes the Barley).
