Dutch premiere

Festival year: 2011

Moving documentary film about the impact of the European immigration policy on four refugees from Chechnya. Once the conflict in Chechnya is behind them, they encounter new problems when seeking asylum in Europe. They have to prove who they are. And what happened to them. The man versus the state machine.

During one year, director Kerstin Nickig followed the four Chechens, who have to overcome repeated setbacks in order to start a new life in Europe with their families. We get an idea of their dreams, fears and desire to lead an ordinary life.
39-year-old journalist Ali awaits a decision on his asylum application in Poland. In his smoky room in the refugee reception centre, he has plenty of time to write down his thoughts on Europe and the hopeless situation he finds himself in. 50-year-old Wacha was granted asylum in Austria as a political activist, but his son is prosecuted in Russia. He puts in every effort to get him to Europe. Tamara, 55 years old, lives in Vienna with her husband and disabled daughter who needs medical treatment urgently, but their deportation seems inevitable. 33-year-old Ruslan is stuck in Ukraine, without housing and with no means to make a living. He hopes to be able to take his family to western Europe as soon as possible.
The film is a tribute to over 100,000 Chechens who have fled the conflict in their country.
