Here to Stay
Pierre Barougier / Olivier Bourgeois
Here to stay (Nous Resterons sur Terre) examines the state of our planet, taking into considerations both its beauty, horror and all its contradictions. This documentary film is looking into the way mankind tries to tame nature, and creates a play of mirrors and contrasts between all nature’s miracles and man’s obsessions. It gives the feeling of the relation between Mother Earth and her ungrateful children. We follow environmentalist James Lovelock, philosopher Edgar Morin, and Green Cross International President Mikhaïl Gorbatchev. It shows the different ways in which man has exhausted the planets natural resources over the past decades, in its frenzied fantasy of constant progress, leading to a breakdown of mans natural harmony with nature. This is not a tragedy of the past: urban areas are still expanding, whole species are still threatened by extinction, and climate changes are threatening the future of the planet as a whole. What is it that we have lost already? What can we still loose? Can we change the tide, and if so how? Is this what we really want? When? The documentary does no provide answer to such questions; instead, we are left free to assess in what state of emergency we are. Just one thing is for sure: We are 'Here to stay.'
