How do filmmakers and photographers create their projects about human rights issues? Which choices do they make? During the Movies that Matter Festival you will have the opportunity to meet the makers and listen to their stories. MtM Academy features various masterclasses and lectures by filmmakers, photographers, journalists and experts.
Tickets for the masterclasses and films can be bought as from March 3rd. For some of the masterclasses the entrance is free. It is recommended to make reservations in advance.
Masterclass Jan Banning, photographer-artist

Dutch photographer Jan Banning will give a masterclass about his exposition Law & Order. As part of the Movies that Matter Festival, the Atrium at The Hague organises a photo exposition of Law&Order by photographer Jan Banning. The festival takes place from18-26 March in Filmhuis Den Haag and Theater aan het Spui. The exhibition can be visited from 1-26 March.
Law&Order by Jan Banning is about criminal law in France, The United States, Colombia and Uganda. With the question “How do we deal with crime” in mind, Banning photographed mainly in police stations, in court houses and prisons. With this exposition and book he wants to contribute to the public debate about crime and punishment.
Masterclass Serge Brammertz, prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)

Prior to the screening of the film The Prosecutor, the Defender, the Father and His Son, the Camera Justitia masterclass will be structured by fragments taken from films out of this year’s festival selection. Brammertz will answer questions from the audience. The masterclass will be moderated by philosopher of law Heikelina Verrijn Stuart, independent academic publicist on international legal matters.
Masterclass Cathrine Gyldensted – Constructive Journalism

Cathrine Gyldensted is the originator of applying positive psychology and related fields to the innovation of journalism. She has pioneered constructive journalism methodologies since 2011 and works with media companies and journalism schools globally. She previously worked for 15 years as an investigative reporter and foreign news correspondent and holds a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, US.
Film & Masterclass – True Stories
Friday 25 March at 10:00 hrs at Filmhuis Den Haag 2
Entrance: € 10 / € 8 students / length: 180 min / The masterclass will be in English.
In this masterclass, that will take place after a film screening, the maker will talk about the writing process, film production and how the film was reviewed by press and public. Using film clips, the director will also talk about how to depict a true story. More information will be published soon.
Paneldiscussion – True Stories

Entrance: € 10 / € 8 students / length: 120 min / The panel discussion will be in English.
During a panel discussion, three filmmakers will talk about the possibilities and obstacles of depicting true stories. The audience will have the opportunity to talk to the filmmakers about the creation of fiction films based on written stories, as well as creating films based on true stories. Using film fragments, the directors will discuss the distance between maker and subject, the autonomy and limitations in the progress of creating a film based on a true story and the impact these films have on the audience.
Masterclass after the retrospective of Dutch filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich

This year the festival will screen the retrospective of Dutch filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich. In his lively trilogy on Indonesia, viewed through the microcosm of the funny and touching daily lives of the Sjamsuddin family, consisting of De Stand van de Zon, De Stand van de Maan and De Stand van de Sterren. After this the filmmaker will give a masterclass about his work.
