music that matters
Besides films, debates and expositions, the Movies that Matter Festival presents a wide array of music performances. Just like film, music has the capacity to touch people and bring different cultures together. Both Dutch and international artists enlighten Theater aan het Spui in The Hague with their gypsy swing, blues, reggae, salsa and pop music skills.
All performances will take place in the foyer of Theater aan het Spui, and entrance is free.
Samba Touré is the Malian guitarist, vocalist and composer whose distinctive style is widely regarded both at home and abroad as both reflecting and enhancing the enduring legacy of the legendary Ali Farka Touré. His carefully crafted compositions demonstrate his own style, through his use of a variety of colours, languages, rhythms and feelings. Many of the songs represent different ethnicities and regions, as Samba sings for peace and unity in Mali.

Racoon is a Dutch pop-rock band founded in 1997 in Goes, Zeeland. Bart van der Weide (vocals) and Dennis Huige (guitar) were fed up with the sound of their hardcore rockband Vic’tem and decided to go acoustic. Later they were joined by bass player Stefan de Kroon and drummer Paul Bukkens.The first single, "Feel Like Flying", became a hit and got a lot of airplay on the Dutch radio station 3FM. The band's biggest hit so far came in 2005, with the single "Love You More".

The Band Hotel
The Band HOTEL was born in 2004 on a smal houseboat in Amsterdam, nowerdays they house on the little lighthouse island of Amsterdam. The Band HOTEL is a serious grooving band with growing live reputation. Their music is streaked with styles and stories from all over the world. Nine different musicians from nine different countries from all over the world join together and give color to the band The Band HOTEL: Croatia, The Netherlands, Mexico, Kurdistan, Argentina, France, Bulgaria, Czech republik and Chili.

Already made reputation as Frank-E, regular DJ at the 'Paard' in The Hague. He rocked 'Lowlands'. He is the godfather of the 'Grooveyard', mister Rare Grooves. His Funk parties became famous under the name 'The Funk Syndicate'. As the 'Soulslammer' he goes back to his roots.

The Strong and Silent Types
Two solid acoustic guitars, a raging accordion, and a rocking double bass. With Django Reinhardt’s swinging music as its starting point, the Strong and Silent Types play an exciting and soulful mix of gypsy swing, South-American rumba and bossa, and French musette. And they’re even handsome, too! The band has experienced memorable moments on stage in their native Netherlands as well as abroad, ranging from big festivals to small events. It is no surprise that they enjoy the steady attention of a troupe of loyal admirers.

DJ Jairzinho's cultural journalist, music programmer and Afro Latin Jazz DJ. He wrote for media such as De Groene Amsterdammer and De Volkskrant, he does programming for Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam-Noord and performs in venues such as Paradiso, Bimhuis, Melkweg, Amsterdam Global Dance Lab. The shared musical culture history between Africa and the Caribbean is the musical compass to Jairzinho momentum.

Maison du Malheur
Maison du Malheur is the swinging troupe around songwriter J.P. Mesker. In 2011 the rock solid seven-piece band played their first show and immediately got the attention from clubs and festivals. Within a year they played over a hundred shows, opened for blues icon C.W. Stoneking and while touring the band wrote a new album. At the start of 2013, Maison du Malheur signed to the finest indie label Excelsior Recordings and even before the release of their album, beer mogul Heineken asked the band to be the new sound for their worldwide campaign.
