Refugee Specials

Migration is one of the biggest issues of our time. To raise awareness about the hardship and difficulties refugees face, Movies that Matter presents a wide array of films and special side programmes about this topic.

During the opening weekend the In Limbo Embassy wagon will stand in front of the Theater aan het Spui. This is an embassy for refugees that cannot stay in the Netherlands, but are also unable to return to their country of origin.

During the festival a temporary home built by Better Shelter, the Ikea Foundation and UNHCR will take over the Spui square in The Hague. Better Shelter is a social enterprise that develops innovative housing solutions for persons displaced by armed conflicts and natural disasters.

Together with UNHCR and the Foundation for Refugee Students, UAF, Movies that Matter will organise various screenings and in-depth programmes of the documentary Nice People.

At the foyer, during the festival, visitors have the opportunity to see the art installation by former UAF student Nosrat Mansouri and learn how to fold paper boats and listen to stories of refugees.

On Saturday March 26th at 19.30 hrs the crossover, tonguein-cheek show Media that Matter - a cooperation with
journalism production company Prospektor - will also shine a light on refugees and migration, using short film, interviews, and radio documentaries. Former UAF student and actor George Tobal will guide the audience through this theatrical night.
