Q&A with director Iglika Triffonova.Iglika Triffonova
film & TV at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Art in Sofia.
Her career began with a series of documentaries, the first being Year of 1990
documenting the year after the fall of the Berlin wall. The film was
selected by numerous festivals and won the First prize at "Prix Futura",
Berlin, in 1991. Her first feature film was Letter to America
and was awarded 9 national prizes, including the Bulgarian nomination
for the 2001 Oscar awards for best foreign film and was selected by over
45 international festivals. The Prosecutor the Defender the Father and His Son
is Triffonova's seventh feature and third full-length fiction film.
About this film Triffonova has said in an earlier interview that the
idea originally came from a true story that attracted the interest of
the media in the Netherlands and Bulgaria in the summer of 1997. "I believe true stories are the most powerful metaphors of the world we’re living in,"
she said. Triffonova wrote the screenplay and did most of the research
in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Netherlands herself. She stresses that
even though all the lead characters are based on reality, "now, in the film, this is completely secondary – my characters are now fictional".
