After the film, the discussion will continue with director Gry Winther en Simone Remijnse, IKV Pax Christi. VARA presenter Simone Weimans will moderate the panel.
In March 2003, the Cuban regime conducted sweeping arrests of 75 citizens who had played key roles in the fight for the democratisation of Cuba. Their numbers included librarians, union representatives, and independent journalists. Each of them was put through a show trial and sentenced to a long prison term ranging from 6 to 28 years. While some of them have since been set free, 54 still remain in prison. The film follows the wives, sisters and daughters they left behind, Las Damas de Blanco, whose peaceful protests beg attention for the fates of their beloved.
Simone Weimans started her career as a 12-year-old junior reporter on a Dutch children's radio show for VARA, a medium that continued to appeal to her as she reached adulthood. After studying communication science and working for Radio Netherlands Worldwide, she returned to VARA radio in 1998. In the years that followed, she worked as an editor and reporter for such programmes as De Karavaan, Binnenlandse kwesties and Halte 747. She also presented Punch and De Ochtenden and is currently one of the presenters for ‘Radio Kassa'. Simone makes regular television appearances on ConsumentenTV in Vraag & Beantwoord as well as a consumer news show, and presents debates organised by VARA and HCC in De Balie, Amsterdam.
