Introduction by Ciska Dresselhuijs, chairman of the jury for the Human Rights Defenders Tulip, about the problems she encountered while assigning the award to the Chinese activist Ni Yulan.
Ciska Dresselhuys was the editor-in-chief of Opzij, a feminist monthly magazine, from 1 November 1981 to 1 April 2008 (until her pension). She started her career in journalism with Dutch national daily newspaper Trouw. She chairs the jury for the Human Rights Defenders Tulip, the human rights award of the Dutch government. Since 2008, the government has presented the award to a man or woman who has shown exceptional courage in defending and promoting the rights of his or her fellow citizens.
Ni Yulan, the protagonist from the documentary Emergency Shelter, was awarded the Human Rights Defenders Tulip in 2011.
