Q&A with director Thomas Wallner, led by Edwin Koopman (Latin America correspondent).
Thomas Wallner is a German filmmaker working in Canada. Wallner co-founded Xenophile Media in 2001 and won a Gemini Award for the TV documentary Beethoven’s Hair. In 2005, he was placed on the USA’s terrorist watch list because he refused to cooperate with a mandatory retinal scan on a trip to that country. The incident inspired him to make The Guantanamo Trap.
Edwin Koopman studied Social Geography at the University of Nijmegen. He has been working on topics related to Latin America since 1985. He was editor and then final editor successively for Inter Press Service, the Nieuwe Geografenkrant (a publication of the Royal Dutch Geographical Society) and Radio Netherlands Worldwide. He has been working as a Latin America correspondent since 1999 for Elsevier magazine, Dutch national daily newspaper Trouw, VPRO and Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
