zondag 28 maart 2010 - 13:00
Sunday afternoon showcases international journalism and the risks and challenges inherent in the profession. The Balibo Five were killed when they covered the invasion of East Timor by the Indonesian army. Dutch journalist Sander Thoenes died 25 years later, in September 1999, when he reported on the Indonesians' departure for The Financial Times and Vrij Nederland. The Dutch government has been pressuring the Indonesian government in Jakarta to prosecute the perpetrators for the past ten years, without any result.
After the film Balibo, the current mayor of The Hague and former Foreign Affairs minister Jozias van Aartsen, Indonesia expert Nico Schulte Nordholt and Euro MP Thijs Berman talk about the possibilities of using European Union channels to motivate the government in Jakarta to finally start an investigation into Dutch journalist Sander Thoenes, who was murdered in 1999.
Moderator is Harm Ede Botje (Vrij Nederland, FreeVoice).
I.c.w. Vrij Nederland, NVJ and Freevoice.
Followed by the screening of Reporter in Filmhuis Den Haag 1 at 4:15 pm.
