Q&A with activist Andrei Sannikov and Iryna Khalip (Novaya Gazeta journalist). Moderator is Marnix de Bruyne.
Andrei Sannikov has been a public figure in Belarus for twenty years, but he gained international fame when he wanted to become president. He was second in the elections, which was rigged widely. After the elections Sannikov and most other presidential candidates took part in a mass demonstration. He was arrested and sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Sannikov received amnesty in 2012 and moved to the UK. Read more about Andrei Sannikov.
Iryna Khalip is a Belarusian journalist, reporter and editor in the Minsk bureau of Novaya Gazeta, known for her criticism of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. For her journalistic activities she has been regularly harassed, detained, and beaten by the Belarusian KGB and authorities. In May 2011, she was given a two-year suspended prison sentence for her role in protests following the 2010 Belarus election.
