Before the screening of the film Dirty Wars, Monica Alisse will give a presentation about her exposition Mapping Malala at 19.00 hrs at the studio of
Filmhuis Den Haag.
Mapping Malala invesigates the flow of publications that followed the attack on a young Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, and the way American and Pakistani media treat news. Mapping Malala shows how the news and media may create nuances or framed words to convey an idea that supports, justifies or interrelates with an opinion that may not have any relevance at all. By tracking the news stories around Malala's brutal attack, Monica Alisse shows us how the story of Malala is distorted by conspiracy theories and clouded facts in order to support political and social views. How do these authors and media push their reading of the story? And how do online publishing and a growing reader's participation influence our perception of news?
Monica Alisse graduated in 2013 cum laude from the Design Academy, department of Information Design, with her thesis Mapping Malala. She lives and works in Eindhoven and is currently teaching at the HKU.
