Suppose you are an artist, theatre producer, graphic designer, photographer or other creative professional who has something to say about politics or society. How do you make it happen? Do you drag your soapbox from the shed and stand in a public place holding a monologue, or are there other ways to go about it? Including workshops, lectures, a film programme, a heated debate and the presentation of socially engaged work, Het Nutshuis looks at activism in art, in cooperation with Movies that Matter, Villanuts, Kunst in de Wereld and Nieuwe Garde.
Starting at 2 pm, an active working group will address the friction between engagement and autonomy, looking at the power of art as a communication medium in today's society. Participants cooperatively examine various strategies, illustrated by anecdotes from leading art-makers operating outside the established order.
Kunst in de Wereld is a network of artists and producers pursuing social engagement, operating off the beaten path and creating art that stands in the middle of the real world. They promote mutual cooperation by organizing working groups, maintaining a website and publishing newsletters. In the network meetings, they explore the tension between ideals and artistry, between dreams and action, between the internal world that an artist inhabits and the cold, hard reality outside.
