Director Ruben Östlund based the story for Play on true events. In the city centre of the Swedish city Göteborg, a group of young teenagers, aging from 12 to 14, attacked approximately forty children. The boys played an elaborate game of roll playing, in which verbal and psychological intimidation was key. Play was awarded the Coup de Coeur Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film offers a narrowly focused portrait of the multicultural society, ‘haves-and-have nots’, peer pressure and group dynamics. Release in Dutch cinemas on May 3rd.
