Rape in conflict has been viewed as a byproduct of war, as a right for the conquerors. Victims of sexual violence were ignored. Today the NIOD film symposium ‘Rape. Sexual violence in the age of genocide’ highlights the different appearances of sexual violence in war and genocide in film, lectures and discussions. Apart from the history of sexual violence, rape during the Second World War, the war in DR Congo and the mass violence in both Rwanda and the Former Yugoslavia will be discussed.
