Directors Femke and Ilse van Velzen are nominated for the Dick Scherpenzeel Award 2009 because of making the documentary Weapon of War, screened at the Movies that Matter Festival 2010. Bette Dam and Thomas Erdbrink are also nominated. The 27th of May the jury will announce the winner.
Every year the Dick Scherpenzeel Award is given to journalistic productions that give an insight in development issues and/or non-Western countries. The winner will receive 10,000 euro.
The book Expeditie Uruzgan of Bette Dam tells the story behind the government of president Karzai after September 2001. NRC-correspondent Thomas Erdbrink is nominated for his series of articles on the controversial elections in Iran and the bloody uprising afterwards.
