The Oscarnominated film Timbuktu will open the Movies that Matter Fesival 2015 on March 20th. The festival will take place from 20-28 March in the Hague.
The film tells the tale of Kidane who lives with his family and young shepherd Issan just outside Timbuktu, which is in the hands of fundamentalists; playing music, laughing, smoking and football are all forbidden.
French-Mauretanian director Abderrahmane Sissako based Timbuktu on a true story from 2012, when Al Qaida fighters stoned to death the parents of two young children because they were not married. Nevertheless, his film is by no means an angry indictment; Timbuktu is a beautifully photographed, poignant and poetic plea for understanding, featuring beautiful music from Fatoumata Diawara from Mali, who also plays a minor role.
The festivalprogramme will be online at the beginning of March. Ticketssales start on March 5. As for now it is already prossible to buy your tickets for the BEST OF DAY on March 28.
