The Movies that Matter Festival today is all about women's rights, with at 19.00 hrs at Filmhuis 1 a screening of the film Vessel about Dr. Rebecca Gomperts.She sails an abortion ship around the world and docks in harbours of countries where abortion is illegal. Through a helpline the Women on Waves staff provides medical advice and mental support to women who face unwanted pregnancy. At 19.00 hrs at Theater aan het Spui 2 there will be a screening of the film I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced. Afterwards there will be a Q&A with director Khadija al-Salami. Moderator is Dutch journalist Nicole le Fever.
At 21:00 hrs the talk show Female &Fair will take place on the VARA stage in the foyer of Theater aan het Spui. The talk show is about women's rights and reproductive and sexual rights. A number of gynaecologists and 'celebrities' in the field of women's rights will attend the festival, including Congolese Sacharov Prize laureate Dr. Dennis Mukwege (The Man Who Mends Women), Egyptian gynecologist/activist Nawal El Saadawi (The Free Voice of Egypt) and Dr. Rebecca Gomperts (Vessel) from Women on Waves. Led by Elisabeth van der Steenhoven (Director of the gender platform WO=MEN).
