The remarkable documentary The Look of Silence, winner of the VARA Audience Award at the Movies that Matter Festival 2015, will be released in Dutch film theatres on 2 April.
His highly acclaimed documentary is the companion piece to The Act of Killing. The film portraits the courageousAdi, who is bereaved by the Indonesian anti-communist genocide, and confronts unrepentant murderers. Adi is born in February 1968, over two years after the murder of his brother Ramli. Adi watches footage from Oppenheimer’s interviews with the responsible death squad members. The interviewees admit to being under the command of the Indonesian army and – often smiling – show in detail where and how they murdered their prisoners, including Ramli.
