D.R. Congo bans 'The Man Who Mends Women'
The Democratic Republic of Congo has banned the documentary The Man Who Mends Women about Congolese surgeon Denis Mukwege, who has treated thousands of women raped during conflict. In a press release the Belgium filmmakers Thiery Michel en Colette Braeckman state that Media Minister Lambert Mende objects to the film and barred them from screening the film in Kinshasa and Bukavu, as originally planned. The documentary examines the stories of Congolese women who are survivors of rape, and about Dr. Denis Mukwege and his work in Bukavu. Until recently, the DRC authorities had confirmed the film was allowed during several telephone contacts with Minister Mende. Colette Braeckman met with Minister Mulumba Kin Kie, who served as an Acting Media Minister, who confirmed the film could be shown.
The filmmakers won the A Matter of ACT Award at the Movies that Matter Festival 2015 earlier this year and have been granted financial support to screen the film in D.R. Congo and other countries.
