Young Amnesty Film Days

Educational screenings during the Movies that Matter Festival (primary and secondary schools)

From 24 until 30 March 2011, Movies that Matter will organise a human rights film festival: The Movies that Matter Festival.  Educational screening, presented as The Young Amnesty Film Days, will take place on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th of March in a central location in Amsterdam. These screenings are specifically meant for secondary and secondary vocational schools. On Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th of March, educational screenings will take place in Filmhuis Den Haag.

Film has proven to be an appealing way to get young people involved in human rights and society at large. The way students reacted to the film Sand and Sorrow, about the failing of the international community in Darfur, shows how film opens young people’s eyes to human rights. You can see the report School trip to Darfur here. Movies that Matter selects three films, differentiating between the lower years of the pre-vocational secondary schools, the lower years of senior general secondary and pre-university schools and the higher years. All films are followed by a discussion with the creator of the film and/or an expert. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and share how they experienced the film. To prepare the screenings and/or to discuss the film afterwards, free-of-charge teaching materials are available. Follow this link for examples. The screenings and the teaching materials are suitable for various subjects.

The time of the screening is determined in cooperation with the schools. The costs are 3,75 euro per student and the CJP Culture Card can be used to pay. You can apply for a screening by mail: educatie@moviesthatmatter.nl or by phone: 020-7733624.
