This year's Erasmus Prize-theme is 'international prosecution and trial of war cimes and crimes against humanity'. The prize is awarded to two renowned jurists; Italian Antonio Cassese and American Benjamin Ferencz. Praemium Erasmianum, in cooperation with Movies that Matter Foundation, is organising a programme of film and debate events around this theme in five Dutch cities. The programme consists of three discussion provoking films, introduced by special guests or followed by a debate.
Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today (1948) - The 2009 Schulberg/Waletzky Restoration The 1948 documentary Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today is a unique film document about the first Nuremberg trial. Written & directed by Stuart Schulberg for the U.S. War Department, it was widely shown in Germany as part of the denazification campaign. But government officials suppressed the U.S. release. The English version was left in rough form, and the negative disappeared. Filmmakers Josh Waletzky & Sandra Schulberg (the director's daughter) have constructed a new international soundtrack using original trial recordings, and created a new 35m negative. Sixty years later, with support from the Nationaal Archief, "one of the most important movies never seen”, finally comes to the screen. Sandra Schulberg introduces the screenings in The Hague and Tilburg.
Judgement at Nuremberg - Stanley Kramer, USA 1961 The 1961- Oscar washout Judgement at Nuremberg features a star-filled cast. Besides Spencer Tracy as the retired chief judge, the film showcases legendary actors such as Burt Lancaster, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift. In this thrilling courtroom drama three American judges challenge four German judges accused of Nazi evil practices. Judgement at Nuremberg is the favorite film of this year's Erasmus Pize winner, Antonio Cassese.

The International Criminal Court set up in The Hague in 2002 is the most ambitious attempt yet to change this unwelcome reality. The Reckoning covers the court's first few years and Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo's fierce struggle to bring the warlords of the Congo and the president of Sudan to justice.
Where and when? The films are either English spoken or subtitled in English. The debates will be in Dutch or in English, depending upon the city hosting the screening.
