Martijn Eickhoff from the Dutch Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD) will talk to director Joshua Oppenheimer and Yusuf Sudrajat. He was one of the founders of the International People’s Tribunal 1965.

Yusuf Sudrajat was born and raised in Indonesia. He views the stigma suffered by his family from a different perspective. Yusuf grew up in Bandung, west-Java and just like most of many generations of school children and his fellow countryman, he was also a product of the indoctrination of General Suharto and his New Order. The seed of the fear of communism is being planted very early since the beginning of the education as it is a part of the curriculum.

Yusuf grew up with the idea that communism is to be feared and  equal to absolute evil and communists are the most horrible kind of people there is. Not knowing that his grandfather was a member of the Constituent Assembly representing the fraction Communist Party of Indonesia(PKI). As this truth was kept as a family secret. Until he was 11 years old, he was being told that his grandfather died long time ago. And for him that was the truth. But everything changed when he came to visit Europe on a vacation. He was then exposed to the fact that his grandfather was actually still alive and was in fact a member of the PKI.
