In the Activist competition program (formerly known as A Matter or ACT) we show eight special documentaries about the work and life of human rights defenders.

During the Movies that Matter Festival 2018 (23-31 March) An international jury awarded the Golden Butterfly Activist Documentary Award and €5000 to film maker Joe Piscatello for his film Joshua: Teenager vs Superpower.
The Golden Butterfly Activist Human Rights Award and €5000 went to Jaha Dukureh from the film Jaha's Promise.

The jury consisted of jury chairman Lilianne Ploumen, actor Achmed Akkabi, film director and head of the Karama Beirut Human Rights Film Festival Haytham Chamass, Prof. Helen Duffy (Gieskes Chair of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law) and director Beth Murphy.

As a guest of honor, Kumi Naidoo visited the festival. Known as a former anti-apartheid activist and director of Greenpeace International, Naidoo is appointed in August 2018 as the new secretary-general of Amnesty International.

Activist is organized in collaboration with main partner Amnesty International.
