The guest of honor of this year's festival is Kumi Naidoo. Each year we invite a renowned human rights activist or advocate to attend the festival and provide the activists in the competition programme Activist (formerly known as A Matter of ACT) with knowledge and guidence in their work.

Kumi Naidoo has recently been appointed as the Secretary General of Amnesty International, and will assume this new position in August of 2018.

After stepping down as Executive Director for Greenpeace International, Kumi has since been serving as the Interim Board Chair for the Pan-African civil society movement, Africans Rising for Justice Peace and Dignity. Kumi is a founding ambassador to the Campaign for a Just Energy Future and is a patron of Future SA which both advocate for accountability and an end to corruption in South Africa.

He has served as Secretary General of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, Board Chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAAP) and President of the Global Call for Climate Action (GCCA). Kumi now serves as Board member for 350.org, the Global Greengrants, and as an ambassador to the Southern African Faith Communities Environmental Institute. Kumi is also an advisor to Transparency International and the Environmental Grantmakers Association.  Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., he is currently involved in setting up a new Institute for the Advancement of Creative Maladjustment.

On Saturday 24 March Naidoo will introduce the film Silas (at 21.15 hrs at Theater aan het Spui Kleine Zaal). He will also introduce Thank You for the Rain, as part of Climate at Stake on Sunday 25 March at 10.45 hrs. Furthermore, Naidoo will take part in several events where he will meet and talk to the activists.
