The impressive documentary Reporter follows Nicholas D. Kristof. In the summer of 2007, this famous reporter for The New York Times, who won the Pulitzer Prize twice, goes to the Democratic Republic of Congo to report on the civil war. 5,4 million Congolese people were killed over the past ten years. However, these statistics hardly impress the average newspaper reader. Kristof explains in what way the public can be reached. He sets out to find people whose story illustrates the human rights crisis in Congo. He travels through destroyed villages and refugee camps and pays a blood-curdling visit to Congo’s main warlord, general Nkunda. That way, Kristof tries to put Congo on the political agenda – just like he did before with the genocide in Darfur. Reporter is not only the story of an underexposed conflict in Africa, but also a plea for good journalism, which is increasingly jeopardized by down-spiralling budgets.
