The Fall

Tarsem Singh

United States, India 2006, 117 min.

Spoken language: English

Subtitles: Dutch

Festival year: 2018

Reality and fantasy mix in this magical tale by Tarsem Singh (The Cell) about the friendship between a five-year-old girl and a stuntman in a hospital in Los Angeles in the 1920s.

After a spectacular crash, the stuntman has become paralysed from the waist down. The girl has a broken arm. After she manages to smuggle enough morphine to him, he tells her the incredible story of five superheroes who escaped from a deserted island to get revenge on an evil governor. It does not take long for reality and fantasy to blend into each other in a dangerous way.

For Weapon of Choice, five Dutch public figures have selected a film they believe everyone needs to see. At the festival, they explain why they each chose their film.

The Fall is the film selected by Sinan Can. He is an investigative journalist and producer, known amongst other things for his BNN/VARA series Bloedbroeders (Blood Brothers) which premiered in 2015 at the Movies that Matter Festival. In this series, he took a trip through Turkey and Armenia together with Armenian-Dutch musical actor Ara Halici. He had a show on television called In het Spoor van IS regarding the rise and fall of the Islamic State, for which he travelled across Iraq and Syria. A new season will be screened at the festival.

The Fall is part of the Weapon of Choice theme programme.
