To celebrate the fiftieth birthday of the Cuban revolution, the façades of downtown Santiago de Cuba are repainted. Moreover, freshly painted buildings will benefit tourism – the mainstay of the Cuban economy. But behind the beautiful façade of refurbished houses Cuba shows an entirely different face, according to Maria and Juan. These two young Cubans, who are under house arrest for having been in contact with foreigners, tell what it is like to live in a country where one can be betrayed at any moment. A country in which one receives a longer prison sentence for killing a cow than for committing a murder. A lick of paint cannot hide the shortcomings of the communist system.
