Rafiki: Q&A with Zahid Rajan and Wanuri Kahui

Language: Engels

Q&A with the director of the film, Wanuri Kahui and Zahid Rajan of the Samosa Film Festival in Kenua. The conversation will be led by Volkskrant filmcritic Floortje Smit. They will talk about LHBT-rights in Kenya and the film Rafiki, and its political impact. Rafiki was banned in Kenya by the censors, because the film would promote ‘immoral’ behavior. Zahid will talk from his experience of producing a human rights festival in Nairobi. With Wanuri we will talk about the creative process of the film, the legal battle she fought to get the film back on the screen and her personal fight for LGBT-rights in Kenya. Of course there is plenty time for the audience to raise questions for both Wanuri and Zahid.

Wanuri Kahui is filmmaker, autor and Kenyan. Wanuri is fighting an important struggle for artistic freedom and LGBT-rights in Kenya. Wanuri is in the Netherlands to pickup the HIVOS Free to Be Me Award during the Roze Filmdagen in Amsterdam (14-22 March 2019, het Ketelbuis, Amsterdam).

Zahid Rajan is editor-in-chief at the socially engaged AwaaZ Magazine and film festival director of the Samosa Film Festival in Nairobi, Kenya, which focusses on minority-, democratic- and women rights.
