City of Joy: Q&A with activist Christine Schuler Deschryver

City of Joy

Language: Engels

Q&A with activist Christine Schuler Deschryver and director Madeleine Gavin about sexual violence against women and turning pain into strength.

Congolese writer Kiza Magendane (NRC en OneWorld) talks with activist Christine, and director Madeleine Gavin about City of Joy in the DRC, the centre for the recovery and healing of survivors of sexual violence.

Bukavu, the city where the centre is located, is deemed by some as ‘the worst place on earth to be a woman’. Here gynaecologist Denis Mukwege, playwright Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) and Congolese human rights activist Christine Schuler-Deschryver establish the City of Joy. As a survivor of brutal sexual violence, Jane Mukunilwa graduated from the first ever City of Joy class and now belongs to the centre’s programme staff. Read more about Jane and Christine and watch a short clip.

Activist Jane Mukunilwa who was supposed to join this Q&A is unfortunately not able to attend due to visa issues.
