Q&A with activist Christine Schuler Deschryver about sexual violence against women and turning pain into strength.

Gender equality activist Srushti Mahamuni speaks with activist Christine about the recovery and healing centre for survivors of sexual violence, City of Joy and their experiences in making this film and the impact it has had.

Bukavu, the city where the centre is located, is deemed by some as ‘the worst place on earth to be a woman’. Here gynaecologist Denis Mukwege, playwright Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) and Congolese human rights activist Christine Schuler Deschryver establish the City of Joy. As a survivor of brutal sexual violence, Jane Mukunilwa graduated from the first ever City of Joy class and now belongs to the centre’s programme staff. Read more about Jane and Christine and watch a short clip.

Activist Jane Mukunilwa who was supposed to join this Q&A is unfortunately not able to attend due to visa issues.
