City of Joy: Q&A with activist Christine Schuler Deschryver

City of Joy

Language: Engels

Q&A with activist Christine Schuler Deschryver and Benjamin Duerr about sexual violence against women and turning pain into strength.

Filmmaker Hesdy Lonwijk (My Life and Hide and Seek) speaks with activist Christine and Benjamin Duerr from the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation in the Hague, about City of Joy in the DRC, the centre for the recovery and healing of survivors of sexual violence.

It is estimated that over half a million women and girls have been raped in the ongoing conflict in the DRC, where rape is used as a weapon of war by both government forces and armed militias. The victims are often left by their husbands and cast out by their communities. Jane Mukunilwa and Christine Schuler Deschryver are two of the driving forces behind City of Joy in Bukavu, where these women learn self-defence, tell their stories and ultimately come to love and accept themselves. Read more about Jane and Christine and watch a short clip.

Activist Jane Mukunilwa who was supposed to join this Q&A is unfortunately not able to attend due to visa issues.
