Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day

December 10, 2017

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. On this day, the United Nations and human rights organisations aim to promote their work. Moreover, multiple international prizes for humanitarian work are awarded.

In the context of Human Rights Day, we offer all Dutch embassies the opportunity to screen films in the context of International Human Rights Day, 10 December. More than 50 Dutch embassies from all over the world have expressed interest in organising a screening the 5 selected documentaries. For instance, the film Hissein Habré, A Chadian Tragedy, which won the A Matter of ACT Documentary Award at Movies that Matter Festival 2017, will be screened in Freedom Park in Lagos, Nigeria, followed by a discussion.

Furthermore on this day, Amnesty International hosts several Write for Rights marathons across the globe. During these events, participants write letters demanding the respect of basic human rights or the release of human rights activist.
