Dee Brillenburg Wurth is the Child protection Advisor of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). Her responsibilities include advising the mission and its partners on issues relating to children in armed conflict, monitoring and reporting on grave child rights violations and building the capacity of the Government to implement the Action Plan to stop and prevent child recruitment and sexual abuse by Congolese National Security Forces. She has worked to mitigate the impact of armed conflicts on children for more than 17 years.

She worked for a number of international NGO’s in other war-affected countries, including Kosovo, Albania, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and East Timor. Her main areas of interest were rehabilitation and reintegration of child soldiers, child rights promotion through media (TV, radio and print) and advocacy. In 1999 Dee wrote a 10-part drama series for Young Asia television (YA TV) which included topics such as child soldiers, slavery, HIV/AIDS, sex tourism, the caste system, arranged marriages and child suicide. YA TV is an English speaking channel, reaching 200 million young viewers in Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

She joined the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Burundi as a Child Protection Advisor in 2006. This was followed by two years in West Africa, as the Regional Project Manager for the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. In 2009 she joined the UN again, as Child Protection Advisor in the UN’s Political Mission in Kabul. In 2012 she joined MONUSCO, in the Congo, where she is currently leading a team of 34 professionals to reduce the impact of the ongoing conflict on children.
