Law and Justice in Latin America

From 23-31 March the annual Movies that Matter Festival takes place in The Hague. For nine days, Filmhuis Den Haag and Theater aan het Spui will offer stage to around seventy films and debates about human rights and justice.

The Camera Justitia program focuses on the bright but also the darker sides of law and justice. Eight films andÔÇ»over thirty filmmakers and experts shed light on judicial dilemmas and the challenges of (international) legal systems.

This year, the Camera Justitia programme presents two films about law and justice in Latin America. Both films are nominated for the Camera Justitia Award.

Armed to the Teeth

A documentary by Alberto Arnaut (Mexico, 2017)

Chilling and heartbreaking reconstruction of the murder of two students by the Mexican army in 2010. When Jorge and Javier go out one night, they are killed by soldiers chasing criminals. Relatives go on a search for truth and justice, but the cover-up reaches to the highest levels.

Los Perros

A fiction film by Marcela Said (Chili, 2017)

While her marriage is turning sour, Mariana is attracted to her horse riding instructor. She discovers that he is a former colonel involved in human rights abuses during Chile’s military dictatorship, and that her own father might be implicated too. She goes searching for the truth, not knowing if she really wants to find it at all.

Camera Justitia Masterclass

On Thursday 29 March at 16:00h, Kathryne Bomberger, Director-General van de International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), will deliver the annual Camera Justitia Masterclass. She will talk about the work of the ICMP, illustrated by excerpts from the films Truth Detectives and Armed to the Teeth. Discussion topics include the rights of families of the missing, new technologies for finding and identifying missing persons, the cooperation with governments and the empowerment of civil society organisations. The Masterclass takes place in the Foyer of Theater aan het Spui, and is free of charge.
