Welcome to the Movies that Matter Festival 2018!

We are very happy that you will join us at this tenth edition of the festival in The Hague. In this update we will provide you with some festival tips: films to see, VR to experience, music to enjoy and places to eat. We wish you a very inspiring festival!


On Saturday 24 March at 12.00 hrs at Theater aan het Spui, GZ you can see the marvelous fiction feature Foxtrot by Samual Maoz. After the screening there's a Q&A with Q&A with journalist Derk Walters

Foxtrot tells the story of parents Michael and Dafna, who are devastated when they are told that their son Jonathan, an Israeli soldier, was killed while serving as a guard at an abandoned border post. However, the facts prove to be a bit more complex. A nuanced film about the absurdity of Israeli military culture by the maker of Lebanon.

The Other Side of Everything

On Saturday 24 March at 18:45 hrs at Theater aan het Spui Kleine Zaal, after the screening of the documentary The Other Side of Everything, srchitect and filmmaker Jord den Hollander talks to Bosnian-Dutch architect Arna Mackic, winner of the Young Maaskant prize 2017, about architecture as a metaphor and the search for identity. 
In The Other Side of Everything Serbian filmmaker Mila Turajlic explores the political history of her homeland through the life of her mother Srbijanka: prominent political activist and professor.

Climate at Stake

On Sunday 25 March we present in cooperation with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs the second edition of Climate at Stake. Three documentaries on the effects of climate change on people all over the world. We will screen the documentaries Anote's ArkGuardians of the Earth and Thank You for the Rain. After the screenings filmmakers and experts will join in the discussion about how to sustain our planet.

VR Experience
Take your film experience to the next level with our two free-of-charge VR programmes. A variety of short films will take you on a journey to below sea and to the other side of the world. In VR Feest aan Zee we join forces with The Hague’s celebratory Feest aan Zee programme, celebrating a 200-year friendship with the sea. VR Cinema at the foyer of Theater aan het Spui will take you on a journey from Hollywood to the Indonesian jungle.
Where to Eat

No festival without good, tatsy, wholesome food. The restaurant of Filmhuis Den Haag offers our guests a diner in style and coocks meals with fresh, biological and seasonal products. Want a change of scenery? Guests of the festival can exchange their diner vouchers at these restaurants as well: M’biance at Hotel Mercure, (Spui 180), Pavlov (Spui 173), Spize (Spui 185), MaZo Den haag (Turfmarkt 2), Sapore (Turfmarkt 20, closed on Sundays).

Political Film Quiz

Test your political film knowledge in our first Political Film Quiz on Monday 26 March 26 at 20:45 hrs at Theater aan het Spui. Expect questions about presidents, freedom fighters, dictators, democracy and film. Send an email to to sign up your team. Join us on the dancefloor on Saturday Night 24 march, 22.00 hrs and enjoy the catchy rock 'n roll of the band Afterpartees. With their songs the band addresses both major themes and small problems without ever becoming too heavy to handle. A live-show by the Afterpartees is guaranteed to be a party. Visitors of Best Kept Secret, Into The Great Wide Open, Lowlands and Pinkpop will surely agree.
