The perfect film for your curriculum | €5 student rate | Monday 26 March – Thursday 29 March

Ever wanted to introduce your students to film as an educational tool? Look no further! Movies that Matter has a mission to open (young) people’s eyes to human rights through film. To achieve this, we host thought-provoking film screenings all throughout the year that stir debate and promote human rights education.

We gladly invite you to bring your students to the Movies that Matter Festival in the Hague. Considering our festival takes place 23-31 March, this creates an excellent opportunity for you to pay us a visit as part of the European Studies Buffer Week. For the rate of €5 per student, we organize a screening of a film selected by you. Any film can be picked from our (soon to be announced) festival program, but we happily offer our advice as well. Our screenings feature carefully selected talks or Q&As with special guests to help students delve deeper into the subject matter of the chosen film.

Practical information
Interested? Please send an e-mail to our education department to book seats for your screening at our festival (located ca. 10 min. from The Hague Central Station) or to inquire about which films are best suited to your study program. Definitive film choices can be made at a later time. Film screenings can be arranged for Monday 26 March – Thursday 29 March, with a preferred time slot in the morning or afternoon to be discussed. If you have a notice board at your tuition, we'd gladly send you one of our film festival posters for free.

Maribor Uprisings

Maribor Uprisings offers a unique opportunity to stand in the shoes of protesters – at a safe, virtual distance. As an audience member you are placed in the middle of protests in the Slovenian city of Maribor, and choose your own course of action: do you want to follow the peaceful group down to Liberty Square – or the angry and aggressive mob on the way to the city hall? Through this interactive live film experience the audience explores how protests turn into battles and conflicts. Maribor Uprisings is part of our Resist theme program.

My Homeland

For our theme program On the Move we have selected films that offer a new perspective on migration. Featured is Watani: My Homeland, the story of one family's fight and struggle to survive the Syrian Civil War. Having lost her husband, the mother makes the heart achingly painful decision to leave her homeland, in search of safety and a brighter future for her children. Filmed over three years through mainly the eyes of the children, the film chronicles the family's journey from the front-line in Aleppo, to a little town in Germany.

The Other Side of Everything

Mila Turajlic's new film The Other Side of Everything follows the trajectory of Serbia from the perspective of her mother, Srbijanka. From communism to Milosevic to today's resurgent nationalists, she's been a public voice of resistance to multiple regimes. As the filmmaker begins an intimate conversation with her mother, the political fault line running through their home reveals a house and a country haunted by history. Nostalgia for the past has given way to confronting the politics of the present.
